RE: Graph History context

Marc: partly this was meant to be funny; but the serious context was that we did a kind of social portfolio practice (we humans) back when books were rare and many people shared the books and added "marginalia," that is, reflections, on the text. Others responded to the marginalia. The book at that time was called a "folio." So, by passing around a bound book and writing in the margins, the monks demonstrated an impulse toward reflection in a social context a thousand years ago. The printed book put an end to that and made knowledge seem not social and above comment by readers. The printed book, as a temporary stage in understanding how human's actually create knowledge, was in some ways a regressive step (although it was also a massively forward step too). The distorted concept of how knowledge actually occurs because of the printed book remains with us and prevents, to some extent, educational reform from gaining traction.

The AAEEBL Conference at Stonehiil College demonstrates the successful efforts of a 'few' and the depth-interest of many.
Two years ago the Faculty Learning Communities at Mercy College originated in the work of small core group and within two years has grow to include over 100 committed faculty from each of our five Schools.
This Conference, the meeting everyone, the presenting & receiving, >> all became the 'good' of academia.
For me, the opportunity to articipate in a Mercy Faculty Learning Community has become the essence of 'authentic collegiality'. I feel the content of my slides contributes to AAEEBL's search for 'authentic, experiential, evidenced-based learning". Reflection on the Content demonstrates how the Mercy Portfolio Cohort supports my need to balance collaboration and independence. Collaboratively, I have learned from faculty in each of our five Schools, how to construct standards-based e-Portfolios. individually, I have dared to create Digital stories as a multimedia artifact.
Appreciation :) Eileen

When Melissa shares applications of e-Portfolios facilitating Assessment "Of' and 'For" learning her points are brilliantly original and engaging. She incorporates learning inside the classroom and throughout the student's life. Her concept of Higher-Order Thinking dynamically defines Reflection as an 'a-ha' moment.
After listening to Melissa and reading Pink's "Motivation" I encourage my teacher candidates to shift from Performance Standards to Learning Standards so we all find our selves enthusiastically responding, " a-ha! I never thought of that" rather than "Correct."

We were asked by Kelly Driscoll at Digication to talk about our use of eportfolios for evaluation. I am a graphic design teacher at Northwestern Connecticut Community College. Every five years each department must create a self study. The study serves several purposes but the two big ones are planning and funding. The use of the eportfolio has made this process come alive. The fluid nature of the medium allowed my colleague and me to organically grow the document as opposed to creating a linear document. It is true that one can move in and out of such documents, but the eportfolio made this process much more enjoyable and logical. The ability to break down the many required fields into pages helped us transmit the information so it made sense. The option to add images and link outside information like surveys and pdfs reinforced the information in a way a paper document could not achieve. The self study process at NCCC requires outside reviewers. The eportfolio allows us to send the link to the reviewers where they can read it over at there leisure and comment back. The ease of use and aesthetics are the icing on the cake. The fact that this document is live means that we can continue to change it at will for years to come. Outstanding!
Here is the link to the study. http://nwcc.digication.com/evaluation/Home//

CFP: Learning Technologies--Deadline 8/13/10
By: ,
Mar 26 2010, 6:40 PM EDT
_Academic Exchange Quarterly_—a respected, peer-reviewed, print journal—invites original, unpublished manuscripts of 2000 to 3000 words for its Winter 2011 issue.
Learning technologies—technologies used to enhance learning, teaching, and assessment—are rapidly gaining popularity in higher education. However, the debate concerning the effectiveness of these technologies over more conventional means of teaching remains ongoing. The focus of this topic is to explore evidence-based research on any area relating to learning technologies, but we are especially interested in the following: pedagogical techniques that rely on learning technologies; the use of learning technologies in assessment of outcomes at any level (individual student to entire campuses); and comparisons of technologically-enhanced learning outcomes and conventional outcomes. In any case, we are seeking empirical, evidence-based research studies more than theoretical pieces.
Submissions are welcome from researchers, teaching and learning scholars, learning technology users, as well as others who are actively involved in higher education learning, including graduate students, faculty members, academic staff members, administrators, and researchers in non-academic settings. Submission instructions are available at http://www.tinyurl.com/AEQ-Tech. Identify your submission with the keyword: TECHNOLOGY-1. Please format your paper carefully according to the online instructions. Submission deadline is August 13, 2010.

"Has there been any discussion on a Western chapter? Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming or others? We would be willing to host one here at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. But if there is some group already formed we would like to know so we can connect with them." Yes, we would like a Western Chapter. I'd like to talk with you more about that. A bit of context: we are beginning a collaboration with the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative with a Webinar next academic year and a possibility of collaborating specifically on providing additional program content for the various EDUCAUSE regionals next academic year and beyond. So, that may crystallize over the months. For the New England chapter, with its first conference May 18 at Stonehill College, we've also collaborated with our local Internet 2 Provider, OSHEAN. In your case, I'll need to talk with you to hear what you have in mind. Send me email at trentbatson@mac.com and we can figure out how to proceed. Best Regards Trent

The best evidence I have found that illustrates the value of reflection, particularly in e-Portfolio thinking can be viewed in the student portfolios from the Washington State University e-Portfolio contest in 2007 http://ctlt.wsu.edu/eportgallery and again in 2008 http://ctlt.wsu.edu/contest07/gallery
One of the reasons why we were able to get such rich evidence-based reflection is because of our rubric http://ctlt.wsu.edu/contest07/rubric
In addition, since these contests, our work has evolved. See this blog post on harvesting feedback http://wsuctlt.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/test-drive-the-harvesting-gradebook/ and a recent workshop where Terry L. Rhodes and others were participants for the TLT Group http://mysite.wsu.edu/personal/jaymej/tlt
I think you'll find these examples not only intriguing, but catalytic.

Tamez reframes the conversation
By: ,
Jan 5 2010, 7:57 PM EST
Tamez blogged a reply to Ray Tolley's post (the latter is linked as another comment to this post). http://indigifem.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-toy-map-universe-naah-its.html
I note a few things: First, Tamez discovered our conversation about her when her "parallel universe 'self' intercepted my touchgraph while cruising my google alerts."
Second, the short timeline. Peterson edits this blog post to add TouchGraph 1:32p EST (which would have begun triggering the Google Alert) and posts in AAEEBL discussion 1:51p EST. Tolley replies to Peterson in AAEEBL at 4:30p EST (having already posted to his blog). Tamez replies in her blog at 5:41p EST.
The above is notable because of this comment she makes in the post, that I think pertains to the gap between my and Tolley's comments.
"I would advise anyone who is seriously committed to the larger structural uses of E-portfolios by contemporary students-- who by the way do not view the college classroom as their most significant 'center' of knowledge and tool acquisition, (providing one is inclined to view the technology and control over the production as the domain of liberatory education)--,to examine their assumptions about knowledge and power and the political will of the Indigenous peoples."
I would generalize Tamez' perspective about Indigenous Peoples in the above comment to recognize the developing world which is rapidly gaining Internet access and is positioned to learn how to self-organize and self-educate in the ways Tamez aludes. Another way to represent this conversation is about locus of control. We have a diagram comparing institutional-centric vs Community-based learning. I think Tamez is in the latter camp. https://teamsite.oue.wsu.edu/ctlt/home/Anonymous%20Access%20Documents/AACU%202009/inst%20comm%20learning%20spectrum.pdf

The references to reflection are all too common in e-Portfolio discussions. However, it seems to me that far too often writers only suggest this as some form of self-indulgent introspection. One only has to browse through Helen Barrett's list of Metaphors to realise that the e-Portfolio can have a vast number of uses.
I like the idea of using reflection in respect of considering one's Life-Story - well as far as anyone has got! I also personally believe that reflection can never really be just about introspection but about listening to other people's views, of feedback from peers and mentors and making a balanced assessment of the totality of views,
I was very impressed by W.J. Popham's book, 'Transformative Assessment'. However, in terms of building upon feedback I really felt that there is a place for using given feedback in the reflexive processes.
My question, therefore is: Does anyone know of a good work on reflection, particularly if related to e-Portfolio thinking?

Ray Tolley started a thread on portfolios and reflection http://www.aaeebl.org/thread/3032216/Using+e-Portfolios+for+reflectionWe at WSU have been thinking about portfolios and gathering feedback from authentic communities, and how that could be facilitated. Gary Brown coined the term "Harvesting Gradebook" for this idea. For the last 18 months we've explored that idea and implemented pilot courses using it. At the invitation of the TLT Group we built a working example that will let you see all the pieces of harvesting feedback and getting it to both the learner and to instructors and academic programs. You can explore our example here http://communitylearning.wordpress.com/2009/07/17/harvesting-feedback-on-a-course-assignment/ Having just helped WSU through re-accreditation, we think this has implications for how to develop program- and institutional-review. We'd like your help answering the question in greater detail -- how might this be used to help develop institutional portfolios? You can leave comments here, or in the blog post.

It's good to see an association dedicated to the learning aspects of e-Portfolios as against the functionality. Although it might be a case of putting the cart before the horse, perhaps some might be thinking, 'Now we've got it, what do we do with it?' - and I look forward to this group spelling out and refining the broad spectrum of teaching and learning activities along with ARPEL.
We are all aware of the very wide range of e-Portfolio solutions - every one different and meeting different needs - and varying from some rather narrow commercial products to the free-ranging 'DIY' solutions that other more able students might wish to develop.
My overriding priority at the moment is to try and synthesise those elements of e-Portfolio practice which are uniquely an e-Portfolio solution as opposed to those tools, such as e-assessment products, which are better suited to being embedded within an institution's VLE. In terms of separating out the different functionalities, I have always said. 'Let the VLE do what the VLE does best, and let the e-Portfolio do what it can best do.
I appreciate that there will be other threads dealing with Authentication, defining Experience, and what we understand by Evidence-Based Learning. However, can I ask if this is the place to explore in some depth, even with case studies, how the e-Portfolio influences classroom-based teaching and learning. Here again, of course, is another whole platform for variability. Some schools still use a very formal approach to 'instruction' or teacher-controlled lessons - 'the sage on the stage', whereas other schools are begining to develop a far more personalised approach to learning, 'the guide by the side'.
I have tried to spell out some of these differences, from the perspective of UK schools, on my blog at: www.efoliointheuk.blogspot.com oops reached word-limit.
