How do we endorse learning in a knowledge-abundant environment? 
If learning is happening everywhere and all the time, and some of it is being endorsed as recognition of learning, how do we do that?

The Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-Based Learning (AAEEBL) and the University of Notre Dame (UND) are pleased to host the 2016 Midwest Regional AAEEBL Conference.  AAEEBL is the premier national professional organization dedicated to supporting educational leaders committed to educational transformation relevant to 21st century learners.  AAEEBL is best-known for its promotion of eportfolios as a high-impact practice that encourages learners to reflect on their learning, thereby deepening the learning process.

Open Digital Badges + ePortfolios:
Searching for and Supporting Synergy

 

The presentation will explore ways that evidence-rich open digital badges can help support the goals of ePortfolio practices in higher education and beyond. Digital badges can contain specific claims of competence, attainment, and participation, evidence to support those claims, and links to additional evidence such as completed work.  

Open digital badges allow this information to circulate readily in social networks where they can gather additional evidence and take on additional meaning. As such, they present significant potential to accomplish the varied functions of ePortfolios.

Specifically, badges have potential to support formative functions for advancing learning, summative functions for documenting learning, and transformative functions for fostering learning communities.  This presentation will share examples and lessons learned in this regard from a two year study of selected projects funded in the 2012 Badges for Lifelong Learning Initiative as well as newer projects collaborating with the Open Badges in Higher Education Project at Indiana University.

Brief Bio

Daniel Hickey completed his Ph.D. in Psychology at Vanderbilt University and a postdoctoral fellowship at ETS.  He studies participatory approaches to assessment, feedback, and motivation, in a technology-based context. He has directed projects funded by the NSF, NASA, Google, and the MacArthur Foundation, and is currently directing the Open Badges in Higher Education project. He is Professor and Program Coordinator of the Learning Sciences program at Indiana University.

AAEEEBL Midwest Regionals enjoy the benefit of many close-by institutions that are forward-thinkers in education, learning, and the enlightened use of information technology.  Notre Dame has made a name for itself in the area of a particular kind of endorsement of learning -- badges.

Badges have certainly been in the academic headlines for years, but their implementation always seem just ahead somewhere -- how do we trust badges?  who issues them?  How do they "play" with eportfolios?  Numerous questions remain only partially answered.  Yet, despite these unanswered questions, badges do seem a possible answer to the evidence quandary:  if learners can gather any kind of evidence, in any form, and in any file type, how does anyone assess them?  How do employers understand them? 

These questions are vital to our community.  This Conference will feature a number of sessions on badges but also sessions on assessment or endorsement of learning, or other aspects of eportfolio that is pertinent to our field's better understanding of how to interpret eportfolio evidence.
