With 90 institutional members in the U. S., Canada, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Australia, a growing number of regional chapter conferences in the U. S., and fifteen corporate affiliates (sponsors), AAEEBL is moving toward establishing a world-federation for the ePortfolio community in collaboration with all existing portfolio organizations and initiatives.
AAEEBL emerged from the pre-existing ePortfolio community. It is a community effort, more a coalescing of energies than a startup. By joining AAEEBL, members of your campus community can influence the direction of the portfolio movement and industry, can establish a professional identity, can join in research projects sponsored by AAEEBL, can publish in The AAEEBL Learner, issued 6 times a year, learn about portfolios and can present at either our world conferences or at our AAEEBL regional conferences. Individuals receive member discounts for conferences.
Portfolio concepts about active learning, assessment for learning, reflective and integrative thinking, and about outcomes-based curricular design are demonstrating the test of time. The number of institutions, states, and countries engaged with portfolios continues to grow. The number of vendors also continues to grow. A realization is emerging that portfolio thinking and approaches are a vehicle for institutional transformation toward practices appropriate in the knowledge economy of this century. Big mouthful, but we talk with many campuses and schools and find more and more evidence that portfolios are becoming a part of the permanent landscape, that administrators and faculty are gaining awareness of the value of portfolio thinking and practices, and that accreditation bodies find value in certain kinds of portfolio-based assessment.
AAEEBL is a community-based (literally -- the community was there before AAEEBL) association whose goal is to increase the use and understanding of portfolios for all of education globally. This can only be accomplished in partnership with leading schools and colleges and universities, existing portfolio initiatives, the industry and with government agencies involved with portfolios. We hope you will want to be part of AAEEBL, or continue to be part of AAEEBL, and to help portfolios continue to spread in influence.
