The following questions are a compilation of the questions and concerns identified in an informal polling of eportfolio community members. The answers are the vendor's responses.
What vision or understanding of learning informed the design of your tool?
Our understanding of the learning process is based on idea exchange and collaboration. What and how a student learns depends on access to resources, quality of curriculum and instruction, and the process of reflection and progress. Our tools are designed to facilitate this process and help programs and institutions continually improve curricular effectiveness, promote instructor-student communication, and help students engage in collaborative learning with peers, classmates, professors, and non-LiveText users..
How does your vision of learning promote a student-centered approach to education? (e.g. student ownership of his/her learning)
LiveText’s vision of learning is demonstrated in the way the tools themselves were designed. The tools facilitate a process of learning that is not only giving and receiving grades only but true communication and collaboration – that is coaching and reflection. Various mechanisms involved in submitting or re-submitting work, sharing work, reviewing and assessing work, and promoting discussion demonstrate that LiveText’s approach to product development is based on a learning philosophy grounded in coaching.
Does your tool allow students to control permissions? Can they share with people outside of the institution? How? (e.g., advisor, prospective employer, etc.).
Yes, all users can control with whom they share or to whom they send their work for review. They can give these users the right to just view and/or edit the work. They also can send or share their work with those who do not have LiveText users memberships, by assigning the work they want to share a Visitor Pass. The user creates a Visitor Pass and then assigns the specific pieces of work they want to share to this Visitor Pass. This Pass has a code associated with it. That code can be given to anyone who then logs onto www.livetext.com and enters it. They can then see the work but are not able to edit. Students can share work with classmates, instructors, advisors, mentors, prospective employers, and any other third party.
What is the process for inviting feedback on work or artifacts?
Assessors are able to post comments directly inside a student-submitted work or artifact. Comments can be made a page or even the word-level. General comments for the entire submission can be written. Overall grades can be assigned. Calls for a re-submission can be requested. Artifacts can be re-attached with comments to the submission. Then once the assessment is completed and submitted back to the student, the student is able to see all of the instructors’ notes and use those comments, grades, and the assessment as a whole to revise the submitted work.
Describe how your tool promotes and supports student-to-student collaboration.
Within LiveText, students are able to collaborate with one another on several different levels. In fact, it is very easy for a student to become familiar with the various ways of communicating with classmates as they transition their familiarity with social networking sites to LiveText. With ways to share your work with multiple parties, engage in discussion boards with other members, and receive feedback, LiveText makes group work and communication a logistical breeze and also helps student develop the skills necessary to work productively in groups. Unlike many of the social networking sites, with LiveText’s Visitor’s Pass capability even allows students to control who sees their work, with whom they share their work, and how they collaborate with those not inside LiveText.
Describe how your tool promotes and supports student-to-faculty collaboration.
The very foundation upon which LiveText is designed is the instructor-student coaching process. When students submit work, faculty can evaluate and assess the work immediately, providing feedback, comments, grades, and rubric scoring for the student. Students can submit assignments, journals, reflections, and any customized document for review or share with professors, who then can assess the submission and even request further work on it and a resubmission. Students then have the chance to re-work the piece and re-submit, an illustration of the coaching and mentoring process.
How does your tool support and encourage the reflection process for students and faculty?
LiveText is designed with capabilities for complete and unlimited document creation and attachment storage. This means that all of a student’s work for the entire duration of their academic career can be found within LiveText and used to compile customized, extensive learning portfolios over any span of time. These portfolios can highlight particular skills sets, progress in particular subjects such as writing, include reflection pieces, highlight specific achievements and accomplishments, be used for potential job hunting, and be looked as a longitudinal repository of student learning and progress.

What is the main strength of your application?
From course-embedded and third-party assessment to the use of e-Portfolios, LiveText allows institution's to assess, measure, and report program, college, and institutional outcomes their way. Unlike other solutions, LiveText provides each department with the ability to determine its own assessment method, whether that be assessment based on e-Portfolios, courses, or third-party. LiveText helps administrators track student success, program learner outcomes, and continuous program improvement. Direct evaluation of student outcomes and indirect assessment of program standards in turn become second nature to faculty, staff, and students. Decisions based on data are crucial, and LiveText facilitates data collection needed for the accreditation process.
What weaknesses have been identified relative to the user experience and shared with you?
Rather than weaknesses, we think of this as progress. Needs with our user and potential user base are always changing and evolving. As such, we continually develop our tools based on customer feedback; Through surveys, focus groups, our annual conference, and feature ratings, we constantly develop, improve, and enhance the tools within LiveText to meet and often exceed the needs of our users.
